* Do your homework on the challenges that your child is likely to face as a teen, and how they may change your relationship. Don't forget what that period of life was like for you.
* Talk with your teen early on about puberty and the changes that will occur. Be prepared to answer your child's questions about issues such as sex, drugs and alcohol.
* Put yourself in your child's shoes. Keep in mind the emotional and physical changes that about to occur in your teen. Be patient and sympathetic.
* Let your child develop his or her own personality, and don't fight over every little thing. But always be firm on serious topics such as sex, alcohol and drugs.
* Understand that your child may be resistant to the rules you impose. It's natural, but this doesn't necessarily mean that your child won't strive to meet your expectations.

SOURCE

Health Tip: Calming Chickenpox

Chickenpox, and its trademark itchy, red spots, is a common disease in children.

The Nemours Foundation offers these suggestions for relieving the itch and keeping your child more comfortable:

* Have your child soak in a warm oatmeal bath every few hours.
* Apply cool, damp rags across your child's body.
* Gently pat your child's body dry. * Before children start school, and each year beginning with kindergarten through the third grade. The test should be repeated when children are in the seventh and 11th grades.
* If concerns arise about a child's language, speech, learning or hearing capabilities.
* If a family history of hereditary hearing loss exists, particularly later in life.
* If there are persistent ear infections.
* If there are problems with the skull or face that may affect hearing, or an injury to the head that rendered the child unconscious.
* If there are other factors that could lead to hearing loss, such as being exposed repeatedly to very loud noise.

SOURCE

Using Music and Sports to Improve Kids' Asthma

<img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; Children may be affected by a disease called juvenile arthritis.

The Arthritis Foundation offers these suggestions to help families cope with the condition:

* Family members should openly discuss what each person is feeling, including concerns, anger and fears.
* The child with juvenile arthritis should not be allowed to shirk responsibilities, as long as he or she is physically able to fulfill them.
* Teach your child about the disease, including information about management and treatment, in an age-appropriate way.
* Don't be overbearing or overprotective. Encourage independence and responsibility.
* Spend time with each other -- as a family, and one-on-one with your child.

SOURCE

Too Much TV Linked With Asthma in Young Children

<img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; * Don't worry about making sure you're doing everything perfectly. Do what you can, the best you can.
* Don't be afraid to ask for help from your spouse or partner, friends or family.
* Sleep as much as you can. Take advantage of your baby's nap time to catch up.
* Plan dates with your partner or outings with your friends to have some time to yourself.
* Talk about what you're feeling with friends and family, as well as other new moms going through the same thing.
* Join a support group for new mothers.
* Keep life as simple as possible after the baby is born. Now is not the time to make major decisions or life changes, unless you must.

SOURCE

Work May Not Be Best for Young Kids

<img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; * When baking, cut sugar down to two-thirds of what the recipe says.
* Sweeten cookies and other baked goods with dried fruits instead of candy or chocolate.
* Instead of offering your child a muffin or a doughnut for breakfast, serve a bagel.
* Set an example by eating various healthy foods yourself.
* Fix foods that are attractive. Decorate your child's plate with bright, colorful foods with different consistencies.
* If your child isn't hungry, don't force the issue. When children are hungry enough, they will eat.
* Stay away from sugary treats. Instead, offer fresh fruits, vegetables, and whole grains.
* Make healthy eating a tradition. * Try not to stand up for long periods. When you do have to stand, move your feet frequently to help maintain your circulation.
* When you start to stand up, do so slowly.
* Keep a cool body temperature. Avoid very hot baths or showers.
* Don't go too long without eating.
* Make sure clothing is loose and not so tight that it can reduce blood circulation.
* Ask your doctor about other factors that could cause dizziness. In some women, lying on their back may impede blood flow as the weight of the fetus presses on certain blood vessels.

SOURCE

Scientists Develop Test for Melamine in Milk

<img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; But it's important that you and your baby continue eating.

The American Pregnancy Association says these foods may help tame morning sickness:

* Foods that can be eaten cold, including cold sandwiches, raw vegetables and fruits such as lemon or ginger, or cold salad. Don't use dressings, seasonings or condiments.
* Foods that aren't too spicy or flavorful, such as plain soups and broths, or a plain baked potato.
* Crackers or pretzels.
* Jello or popsicles.
* Peppermint tea.

Source

Health Tip: Keep Bathroom Chemicals Locked Up

The bathroom may be full of potential dangers and temptations for young children.

Here are suggestions to prevent little hands from getting into bathroom chemicals or medications, courtesy of the National Safety Council:

* Always keep drugs stored in a medicine cabinet that is secured with a lock or child-proof latch.
* All medications should have a child-proof cap, and make sure it is secure and tight.
* Mouthwash may contain alcohol, which even in small amounts can be dangerous for children. Keep mouthwash away from a child's reach.
* When throwing away expired or unused medications, make sure the containers are secure and cannot be opened by children.
* Store toilet cleaners -- which often contain toxic chemicals -- in a locked area that children cannot reach.

Source

Child-Care Relationships Tied to Kids' Stress Levels

<img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; Our new study of over 3,800 inner-city children revealed that living in areas with green space has a long-term positive impact on children's weight and thus health," study senior author Gilbert C. * Keep a watchful eye on your baby's diaper, and change it as soon as possible after it is soiled.
* When you change baby's diaper, clean the infant's bottom thoroughly with warm water and mild soap.
* Pat baby's skin dry after a bath or diaper change -- never scrub it.
* Make sure baby's skin is completely dry before you put on a clean diaper.
* Don't use scented baby wipes, or those that contain alcohol.
* Cover baby's skin with a zinc oxide ointment or petroleum jelly to protect it from wetness.
* Avoid diapers with plastic edges, or plastic pants.

Weight-loss surgery helps with pregnancy: study

<img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; Here are suggestions to reduce your child's risk of catching -- or spreading -- a nasty bug, courtesy of the U.S. National Library of Medicine:

* Make sure your child washes his or her hands before eating and after using the bathroom.
* Encourage the day-care center to regularly sanitize toys.
* When your child is sick, keep him or her home from school.
* For your infant in day care, try breast-feeding to boost the infant's immune system.
* Encourage the day-care center to implement procedures to reduce the spread of germs.
* Encourage the daycare center to change diapers away from food preparation and serving areas.
* Remind staff that they and children at day care should be current with all recommended immunizations.

Kids Need More Vitamin D

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) says it will double its recommended minimum intake of vitamin D for infants, children and teens, from 200 international units (IU) to 400 IU per day.

The move comes as doctors increasingly raise concerns that children, particularly breast-fed infants, do not get enough of the vitamin, which not only promotes calcium absorption and bone health but may also stave off diseases such as cancer and multiple sclerosis. The U.S. National Safety Council has these recommendations:

Wait until the bus stops and the door opens before stepping onto the roadway.

Use the hand rail when boarding or leaving the bus.

Board the bus calmly and choose a seat quickly. Take a seat as soon as possible.

Children should always stay in their seats when the bus is moving.

There should be no loud talking, yelling or other distractions that may bother the bus driver.

Keep head, arms and hands inside the bus. Never stick them out the window.

Keep books, backpacks and other belongings stored on or below the seat, and keep the aisle of the bus clear.

Once the bus comes to a complete stop, children may stand and exit the bus quickly and safely through the front door.

If children must cross in front of the bus, they should walk at least 10 feet ahead of the bus along the side of the road, until they can turn around and see the driver. Be careful, your condition may increased risk of having an underweight baby.

According to researchers, pregnant women who dealt with the death or serious illness of a loved one shortly before or during pregnancy were more likely to have a low-birthweight baby.

Although the findings do not prove that severe stress during pregnancy harms fetal growth, according to lead researcher Ali S. Khashan, of the University of Manchester in the UK, it is possible that this is the case as research indicates that high levels of stress hormones in the mother can hinder fetal growth, and severe stress may make it difficult for some pregnant women to follow a healthy lifestyle.

The researcher advice is: "Expectant mothers should follow standard medical advice and maintain a normal, healthy lifestyle pre-conception and in pregnancy."

Alcohol in Early Pregnancy May Cause Fetal Cell Death

Moms, remember not to drink a few glasses of wine over a short period in early pregnancy, because it may cause these initial signs of fetal alcohol syndrome, facial malformations such as a flat and high upper lip, small eye openings, and a short nose.

Erhard Bieberich, a biochemist in the Medical College of Georgia Schools of Medicine and Graduate Studies, said in a Medical College of Georgia press release, "It's well known that when you drink, you get a buzz.
